A Clash of Kings • 1998
Sleep is good, and books are better.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The joke turns a small pleasure into a preference strong enough to compete with sleep. It also lets Tyrion meet someone outside court on the common ground of books.

In Tyrion VII of A Clash of Kings, Tyrion talks with Alayaya, whose reading gives their conversation an unexpected point of connection. The setting is Chataya’s establishment, which also serves his concealed route to Shae. The card removes “he said” from between the two sentences and joins the spoken wording with a comma.
