Tyrion

That's what I do: I drink and I know things.

— Game of Thrones  ·  2011

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Tyrion's job description and his shrug: a man with no army and no title whose only weapons are wine and knowledge. The line is deadpan, the explanation is a joke, and yet he is right about the dragons. Fans quote it as a personal motto, usually followed by a glass of something.

Spoilers for Game of ThronesShow the scene

In "Home" (season six, episode two, aired 1 May 2016, written by Dave Hill and directed by Jeremy Podeswa), Tyrion Lannister has arrived in Meereen to rule in Daenerys's absence. Her two remaining dragons have stopped eating since she left, and Tyrion guesses that they are miserable because they are chained in the catacombs. When Missandei asks how he can know that, he gives this reply. He then goes down with Varys, meets Viserion and Rhaegal alone for the first time, and talks them calm enough to free them.
