A Man Without A Country

Kurt Vonnegut

There is a tragic flaw in our precious constitution, and I don’t know what can be done to fix it. This is it: Only nutcases want to be president. This was true even in high school. Only clearly disturbed people ran for class president.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Vonnegut jokes that the constitution has a design bug: the people keenest on the top job are the ones who shouldn't have it. He backs it up with a school memory. Wanting power that badly, he suggests, is itself a warning sign.
