A Tale of Two Cities · 1859
Liberty, equality, fraternity, or death; — the last, much the easiest to bestow, O Guillotine!

What it means
Our interpretation.
The passage sets lofty promises beside the ease of killing. Freedom, equality and fellowship are difficult to deliver; death is comparatively simple. Addressing the guillotine makes that imbalance bitterly concrete, exposing the distance between a movement's ideals and the violence done in their name.
