Hamlet ‧ 1602

William Shakespeare

I hold ambition of so light a quality that it is but a shadow’s shadow.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The speaker makes ambition seem almost weightless by calling it a shadow of a shadow. The doubled image reduces something already insubstantial even further. It conveys a dismissive view of striving, treating what might seem important as something barely tangible.
