“My friends!” cried the elephant. “Tell me! Do tell! Are you safe? Are you sound? Are you whole? Are you well?”
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
An elephant calls out to friends with urgent affection, then piles up questions about their wellbeing. Safe, sound, whole, well: the repeated pairs show tender anxiety, a wish to hear reassurance more than to make a speech. The passage voices care through worried, rhythmic insistence.
