Letter from Birmingham Jail

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The claim here is that freedom doesn't arrive as a gift from those holding power over others. It has to be asked for, insisted on, and pursued by the people who are denied it. Rights, in this view, are won through demand rather than handed down out of generosity.
