Man knows so little about his fellows. In his eyes all men or women act upon what he believes would motivate him if he were mad enough to do what the other man or woman is doing.

This describes how poorly people understand each other. We judge someone's strange behavior by imagining what would push us to act that way if we lost our minds. It's less empathy than projection dressed up as insight.
