Peeta

Real or not real?

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a four-word test that sums up what the Capitol did to Peeta, and what recovery looks like: slowly asking what you can trust. The line has been quoted well beyond the series, for gaslighting, trauma and the long way back to knowing what is true. Fans know that how it is answered is the ending.

After the rebels rescue Peeta, they find the Capitol has 'hijacked' him: using tracker jacker venom and torture, it has twisted his memories so that Katniss seems a monster. To sort real memories from implanted ones, Peeta asks the people around him to say whether each is real or not real, and Katniss answers. The question runs through the second half of the book and is the last exchange of the main text, where Katniss answers 'Real.'
