Song of Myself

Walt Whitman

I celebrate myself, and sing myself, And what I assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The speaker joyfully celebrates and sings of the self, then extends that self to the reader: whatever I assume, you will assume. Every atom belonging to the speaker belongs equally to you. Individual pride becomes a shared identity, with the boundary between the two dissolving.
