Miniature leather steering wheel on low desk with blank papers and a small quill pot

The Fountainhead ‧ 1943

Ayn Rand

He loved the wheel of a car as he loved his desk in the office of the Banner: both gave him the same sense of a dangerous monster let loose under the expert direction of his fingers.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Two very different things get linked by the same feeling here. Driving and working at a desk both supposedly give him a sense of controlling something powerful and dangerous. Mastery over that risk, not the activity itself, seems to be the real draw.
