F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel sold poorly in his lifetime; the green light and the 'boats against the current' closing line are now recited at graduations he never lived to see. That final sentence is carved on Fitzgerald's gravestone in Rockville, Maryland. Gatsby's 'old sport' -- used dozens of times in the novel -- was a verbal tic Fitzgerald borrowed from Max Gerlach, a mysterious Long Island acquaintance who signed letters with it.
