Words of Radiance • 2014
I am a stick.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The humour comes from meeting an entirely literal identity with an elaborate argument. Shallan’s powerful ideas cannot make this small part of the world cooperate on demand.

Spoilers for Words of RadianceShow the scene
After the shipwreck in Words of Radiance, Shallan tries to persuade a stick to become fire by Soulcasting it. In chapter 11, its insistence that it is a stick defeats her urgent need for warmth. Sanderson later extended the joke in an April Fools deleted interlude; this page credits the novel scene.
