Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The speaker gloomily predicts that escape without injury is unlikely, and that any exit will leave them crushed flat. The dark punchline turns a grim prospect into a joke: being in one piece is replaced by being one large, squashed piece. It is fatalistic, wry gallows humour.
