For a sitcom about people in their twenties, it is the series' quietest thesis: five friends who half know what they want, and one who has drifted into a career by accident. Chandler's complaint is a joke about not wanting anything, and Ross turns it into a Martin Luther King gag. The line stands in for anyone in a job they fell into.

In 'The One with the Stoned Guy' (Friends, season 1, 1995), Chandler walks into Monica's apartment in a suit, on his way to an appointment with a career counsellor. He has been offered a promotion at the office and turned it down because he does not like his job. He tells the friends in the living room that they all know what they want to do, and he has no dream. Ross calls it the lesser-known 'I don't have a dream' speech. By the end of the episode his boss's rising offers wear Chandler down.
