Grey-uniformed officers recoil around a round black table in a stark battle-station conference room, a black cape at the frame's edge.

Darth Vader

Don’t be too proud of this technological terror you’ve constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line is Vader's whole worldview in a sentence: a ship that can erase a world is a toy beside the Force. Within the film it is ironic, since the Death Star is destroyed by a farm boy using the Force. Fans quote it as a put-down for any show of power, and it comes just before 'I find your lack of faith disturbing.'

Spoilers for Star Wars: Episode IV - A New HopeShow the scene

In Star Wars (1977), Grand Moff Tarkin gathers Imperial officers aboard the Death Star to explain that the Emperor has dissolved the Senate and that fear of this battle station will keep the star systems in line. Admiral Motti scoffs at the Rebels and says the station is now the ultimate power in the universe. Darth Vader answers with this warning. When Motti sneers at Vader's 'sorcerer's ways', Vader silently chokes him with the Force until Tarkin orders him to stop.
