Darth Vader

Impressive. Most impressive.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Vader's praise is a threat and a recruitment pitch in two words: he is admiring the weapon he intends to convert. The measured, appraising delivery by the dark lord, with James Earl Jones's voice behind the mask, made it a favourite compliment-with-menace. Fans quote it for any grudging admiration, and it is a staple of Vader impressions.

Spoilers for Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes BackShow the scene

In The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Luke Skywalker leaves his Jedi training on Dagobah unfinished and flies to Cloud City on Bespin, where Darth Vader has captured his friends to lure him. Luke finds Vader waiting in the carbon-freezing chamber, where Han Solo was frozen, and the two fight a lightsaber duel through the chamber. Vader, watching the young man hold his own, says this line, then continues that Obi-Wan has taught him well. The duel runs on to a catwalk, where Vader cuts off Luke's hand and tells him he is his father.
