Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It is the show's one great statement of principle for Joey, who will give you his couch, his savings and his advice but not a chip off his plate. The joke lands because the line is shouted with total moral certainty, and fans have turned it into the all-purpose reply to anyone reaching across the table. Even a hungry friend of Phoebe's learns the rule the hard way.

Spoilers for FriendsShow the scene
Season 10's "The One with the Birth Mother" (January 2004) gives Joey a plot about plate etiquette. Phoebe's friend Sarah reached over and took some of his fries on their first date. Phoebe makes Joey go out with her again and he orders extra fries just in case. When Sarah reaches for the seafood, he sends his plate to the floor and explains that Joey doesn't share food. Phoebe then tells the others what happened. Rachel confirms it with a story about Joey refusing a grape to baby Emma, and Joey himself finishes it with a shout. The same episode introduces Monica and Chandler's birth mother.
