Kamina

Don't believe in yourself. Believe in me! Believe in the Kamina who believes in you!

— Gurren Lagann ‧ 2007

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Kamina's pep talk is a logical trick: Simon doesn't have to rate himself, only trust someone who rates Simon, and it works. It is Kamina in miniature, a loud, reckless leader whose confidence is contagious, and the series later pays it off when Simon is lost after Kamina's death and Kamina's remembered words turn the line around: believe in the you who believes in yourself. Fans quote the pair as a motivational mantra.

In episode 1 of Gurren Lagann (aired 1 April 2007), Simon is a 14-year-old digger in the underground village of Giha, and Kamina is the older boy he calls big brother, who insists there is a surface above. A giant Gunmen robot crashes through the village ceiling, chased by a girl, Yoko. Simon finds a small mecha, which Kamina names Lagann, and Kamina urges the unsure Simon to trust him, telling him to believe in the Kamina who believes in him. They fight the Gunmen and break through to the surface.
