Your drill is the drill that will pierce the heavens!
— Gurren Lagann · 2007
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Kamina gives a frightened digger a destiny before Simon believes in himself, and the whole series is about Simon growing into those words. The title of episode 1 is the same promise. The line comes back at Kamina's death and again in the finale, where it is how Simon remembers his brother, and fans use it as the show's creed of spiral-powered, reason-defying hot-bloodedness.

Spoilers for Gurren LagannShow the scene
In the first episode of Gurren Lagann (TV Tokyo, April 2007), Simon is a 14-year-old digger in the underground village of Giha who has just unearthed a small drill that glows at his touch. Kamina, the older boy he calls 'bro', has spent his life insisting the surface exists. When a giant Gunman crashes through the village ceiling, Simon brings Kamina and the stranger Yoko to the small robot face he found. Kamina's words of faith in Simon's drill, the one that will pierce the heavens, set the series' theme; he names the machine Lagann, and they drill through the roof to the surface.
