Believe in the you who believes in yourself!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Kamina's whole philosophy handed over as a gift: not blind faith in the loud big brother, but trust in the version of Simon who has learned to stand on his own. Coming in the same episode as Kamina's death, it turns into the show's moral. Fans still quote it as the antidote to self-doubt, usually alongside the drill and the sunglasses.

Spoilers for Gurren LagannShow the scene

In episode 8 of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, "Later, Buddy", Team Dai-Gurren attacks the battleship Dai-Gunzan, and Simon has just captured it with Lagann while Kamina fights beside him in Gurren. When Beastman general Thymilph attacks in his own mecha, Kamina and Simon combine into Gurren Lagann, and Kamina tells his little brother to believe not in Kamina but in himself. He then throws the sunglasses and finishes Thymilph with his new Giga Drill Break. Moments after the victory, Kamina slumps in the cockpit, dead from his earlier wound, and whispers goodbye.
