Just who the hell do you think I am?!

— Gurren Lagann · 2007

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the show in nine words: bluster that turns into a promise. Kamina starts out a loudmouth with no evidence, and the line is what he has instead of proof. The twist is that he dies in episode 8 and the phrase stays; Simon inherits it, and each time someone else says it, it means that they are more than what the world decided they were.

The line is Kamina's catchphrase and it is in episode 1, "Bust Through the Heavens with Your Drill!" (Japan, April 2007). That episode introduces the underground village of Giha, where Kamina drags his younger "brother" Simon on a failed attempt to reach the surface and is jailed because nobody believes his claim to have been there. Simon, who has dug up a small drill-shaped key, springs him out. A giant Gunman then crashes through the ceiling with a girl named Yoko, and the find, which Kamina names Lagann, becomes their way out. The phrase recurs all series, and others take it up: Simon first, then Kittan, then the whole crew in the final battle.
