"Libera Me from Hell", Gurren Lagann (2007)

Do the impossible, see the invisible. Row, row, fight the power!

— Gurren Lagann • 2007

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the series' creed set to a beat: demand the impossible, see what cannot be seen, row, and push back against the power that holds you down. Because it plays across the finale, when the whole cast gives everything, fans hear it as the show's last big promise, the same swagger as Kamina's catchphrases carried into the war that Kamina never lives to see.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (2007), final arc. These words are not spoken by Kamina. They are the opening chant of the song "Libera me from Hell", performed by the rapper Tarantula and Yuri Kasahara, and the show plays it in its last three episodes, 25 to 27, as Team Dai-Gurren fights the Anti-Spiral. The song also scores the opening of the later film Gurren-hen. Its lyrics reuse ideas from Kamina's rap theme, and wrap the chant around the Latin text of the Libera Me, a responsory from the Catholic prayer for the dead.
