Leia

This is our most desperate hour. Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Leia's message is the film's call to adventure, a recorded hologram stored inside R2-D2 and played for a farm boy who has no idea what he has been handed. Everything the saga becomes starts from a princess asking one old hermit for help in a voice that is calm, formal and urgent. It is also the original plea behind every 'you're my only hope' that fans have used ever since, from desperate group chats to last-minute project rescues.

These are the closing words of Princess Leia's full holographic message, recorded aboard her captured ship and hidden in R2-D2 along with the Death Star plans. Luke has only glimpsed a short fragment while cleaning the droid; the whole message plays at Ben Kenobi's home, asking General Kenobi to see the droid safely delivered to her father on Alderaan. When it cuts out, Obi-Wan tells Luke he must learn the ways of the Force if he's to come with him to Alderaan.
