Lydia

I am sworn to carry your burdens.

— The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim  ·  2011

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Skyrim's carry weight is the game's quiet nemesis, and Lydia is the character who solves it, so her line became the sound of relief at an overloaded inventory. The humour is the gap between a grand oath of service and what it means in practice: pack mule. Players have made her the series' unofficial patron saint of carrying the loot.

Lydia is the Whiterun warrior who becomes the Dragonborn's housecarl once they are made Thane of Whiterun at the end of the Dragon Rising quest. This line is not a story beat but a bark from her trade menu: when she is following the player and the player picks "I need to trade some things with you," she answers with one of three replies, one of which is that she is sworn to carry your burdens. It is heard whenever the player hands over loot. She wears steel armour and fights with a steel sword and shield.
