Dragon shout

Fus Ro Dah!

— The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim · 2011

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The first Shout most players meet, and the moment Skyrim becomes a power fantasy: the hero's own voice is the weapon. It outgrew the game as a meme because it is so absurdly physical, used to launch cheese wheels and shopkeepers over mountains, and it is the three-word proof that someone has played Skyrim.

Fus Ro Dah is the Unrelenting Force Thu'um, or Dragon Shout, in Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011). Its three words in the Dragon Language mean Force, Balance and Push. The Dragonborn absorbs the soul of the dragon Mirmulnir to unlock the first word; the Greybeards at High Hrothgar then teach the other two. A fully powered shout sends enemies and objects flying backward, and the hero bellows all three words as it fires.
