Bound prisoners ride a wooden cart along a snowy pine road: blond Ralof in blue Stormcloak armour looks straight at the viewer, beside a gagged nobleman in furs and a ragged thief, with red-cloaked Imperial soldiers alongside.

Hey, you. You're finally awake.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

There is no title card and no tutorial: the game's first move is a stranger talking to you as though you had only been dozing, which hands you a blank-slate prisoner and makes the world feel already in motion. Because every new character starts here, it is the line millions of players have heard at the start of every playthrough, and it works as shorthand for beginning Skyrim, again.

The first words of Skyrim. In the opening quest, Unbound, you come to with your wrists bound in the back of a prison cart in an Imperial convoy. Across from you sits Ralof, a Stormcloak soldier, with the horse thief Lokir beside him and the rebel leader Ulfric Stormcloak at your side. Ralof greets you with this line, then explains that you walked into the same Imperial ambush as the rest of them. The convoy is headed to Helgen, where a dragon attack interrupts what was meant to be your execution.
