A huge olive-armoured gauntlet reaches for a rack of assault rifles in an orbital station armoury as a cigar-chewing sergeant gestures toward it; through the viewport, Earth's curve and a fleet of violet alien warships.

Master Chief

I need a weapon.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

After a medal ceremony staged for the cameras, the Chief goes back to what he is for in four words, and the game flips from parade to firefight. The line is plain and a little dry, and Halo's own later achievements were named after it, so the fandom was not alone in keeping it. It is the sound of a soldier asking for the one thing that matters.

Spoilers for Halo 2Show the scene

Halo 2's third level, Cairo Station, opens in a cutscene on the orbital station above Earth: Master Chief and Sergeant Major Johnson step off a tram into cheering Marines and hovering cameras, with Johnson insisting that folks need heroes. Then the Covenant fleet arrives. In the control room Lord Hood orders the Chief to defend the station's MAC gun from boarders, and the Chief answers "Yes, sir," turns to Johnson and says this line. Johnson replies "Right this way," and gameplay begins with the Chief armed and joining a Marine squad.
