Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The Jedi mind trick, introduced with a calm hand wave at a stormtrooper checkpoint in Mos Eisley, and the first time the audience sees the Force do something other than fight. Its charm is how little it needs: a level voice, a slow gesture, and the stormtrooper repeating the idea back as if it were his own. Fans use it as a joke any time someone wants a plain statement to be accepted without argument, usually with the hand wave.

Spoilers for Star Wars: Episode IV - A New HopeShow the scene

Riding into Mos Eisley with R2-D2 and C-3PO, Luke and Obi-Wan are stopped by a stormtrooper patrol asking how long they've had these droids. When a trooper demands identification, Obi-Wan uses a Jedi mind trick, and each of his calm suggestions comes straight back out of the trooper's mouth, this one included. Waved on their way, they head for the cantina to find a pilot, and find Han Solo.
