What it means

Our interpretation.

Phoebe's grand verdict ends the episode: the clumsy, doomed prom gesture proves Ross is Rachel's one and only, no matter how many times the two split up. It gave Friends fans the word for a soulmate, and "you're my lobster" is still how people declare a partner for life on cards and wedding speeches, whatever real lobsters actually do.

Spoilers for FriendsShow the scene

In "The One with the Prom Video" (Friends, season 2, episode 14, 1996), the gang finds Monica and Rachel's old senior prom tape. Earlier in the episode Phoebe has insisted that Ross and Rachel are "lobsters", because lobsters supposedly fall in love and mate for life. On the tape, Rachel's date has not shown, and Ross, in his father's tuxedo, is talked into taking her himself, but the date arrives first and Ross is left looking dejected. Rachel, touched, kisses him, and Phoebe triumphantly closes the episode with the line. The "lobster" idea came from writer Alexa Junge's husband.
