Snake? Snake? SNAAAAAAAAKE!!!
— Metal Gear Solid • 1998
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Three beats of a name, each more desperate than the last, from a commander who can do nothing but listen to his best soldier go silent. The humour comes from the gap between Campbell's usual dry briefing voice and the sudden operatic panic. Fans yell it at a friend who has been knocked out of a match, at a lost connection, or at anyone named Snake, and it has outlived every game it came from.

The cry belongs to Colonel Roy Campbell, Snake's commanding officer, who talks to him over the Codec radio throughout the Metal Gear Solid series. When Snake is knocked out in the middle of a radio call, Campbell does not simply hang up: he calls the name again, louder each time, until it ends in a long shouted scream. The Metal Gear wiki lists these Codec shouts among the game-over reactions heard in the original Metal Gear Solid, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl later reused the gag when Snake is beaten during one of his optional Codec chats.
