Metal Gear?!

— Metal Gear Solid ‧ 1998

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a title shouted as a plot twist, the series' favourite kind of joke. Because a Metal Gear game makes the walking tank its real villain, 'Metal Gear?!' is the gasp the whole franchise is built to produce, and fans use the same intonation whenever a franchise reveals its signature monster. Joystiq's 2012 headline shows how far the cry travelled.

The exclamation of Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid (1998), the stealth game in which a rogue FOXHOUND and the Next-Generation Special Forces seize the Shadow Moses nuclear facility in Alaska and threaten the world with REX, a new Metal Gear weapons platform. Snake, sent in to stop them, destroys REX at the end. The line is his shocked reaction to the weapon the series is named for. It came back as a headline in December 2012, when Joystiq titled its roundup of The Phantom Pain speculation 'Metal Gear?!'.
