Solid Snake in a sneaking suit and bandana crouches at the edge of a rain-lashed tanker deck at night, cranes and orange lights above him and a searchlight sweeping the sea.

Solid Snake

Kept you waiting, huh?

— Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty • 2001

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke is aimed at us. Snake isn't greeting a comrade, he's greeting the audience that waited three years for a sequel, in a series that loves breaking its own fourth wall. That wink made it a signature: fans heard it as Snake's pledge to show up, and it is the line other games borrow when they want him to arrive with the right swagger.

Spoilers for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of LibertyShow the scene

At the opening of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Solid Snake greets the player with this line, and the Metal Gear wiki notes the same line recurs at the start of Metal Gear Solid 3 once certain objectives are met, treating it as a subtle fourth-wall break. The sequel arrived in 2001, three years after the first game. Snake also says it in Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Subspace Emissary mode, when he first becomes playable; on some discs, the voice is oddly blurred out.
