War... has changed.

— Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots ‧ 2008

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Fans shorten it to a mournful sigh: the world of this series has moved on, and the old soldier who fought its old wars can see it. The line sets up a game about a war economy that has become a business, and it is widely pastiched, usually as a dry joke that some old convention or format "has changed".

These are the first words of the narration that opens the story of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008), spoken by an aged Solid Snake, who is called Old Snake, over scenes of the privatised wars of the game's near future. After the opening PMC adverts, he explains that war is no longer fought over nations, ideologies or ethnicity but is an endless series of proxy battles fought by mercenaries and machines. He describes soldiers whose weapons and gear are ID-tagged and whose bodies are regulated by nanomachines, and repeats the three words as a refrain.
