Skyrim Guard

I used to be an adventurer like you. Then I took an arrow in the knee.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke is in the missing story. A guard who has given up a life of adventure and blames one arrow suggests a whole tragic backstory, and there is something absurd about every town in Tamriel being run by men with the same injury. Within weeks players rewrote the line for everything from bad weather to dropped controllers, and it became the template for one of gaming's most pervasive memes.

Spoilers for The Elder Scrolls V: SkyrimShow the scene

Skyrim (Bethesda, released 11 November 2011) is full of city guards who mutter idle lines as the player walks past, and this is one of them. It is a random "bark" from a hold guard, not a scripted scene or a quest line: a weary guard confesses that he once adventured like the player until an arrow hit his knee. It was not said by every guard in the game, but players noticed it in the first days after launch. A GameFAQs post on launch day repeats it word for word, and a week later a Reddit parody showed a guard with a crossbow bolt in his leg.
