The Eleventh Doctor

I am definitely a madman with a box.

— Doctor Who · 2005

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It reverses what Amy meant as a rueful insult, and it is the Doctor's whole sales pitch: be careful with me, I am not safe. It became the Eleventh Doctor's calling-card line, repeated in The Doctor's Wife and The God Complex, and fans still use it for anyone who is happily chaotic and arrives in a blue box of their own.

Spoilers for Doctor WhoShow the scene

The line comes at the end of "The Eleventh Hour", Matt Smith's first episode as the Eleventh Doctor (BBC One, 3 April 2010, written by Steven Moffat), set mainly in Leadworth. Back inside the freshly regenerated TARDIS, Amy Pond tells the Doctor she had come to think of him as a madman with a box after all these years, and now thought she had been wrong. He corrects her. If she is going to travel with him, there is one thing she must remember, and he says it. She asks only to be home by morning, and the TARDIS leaves for the Vortex.
