Vizzini

He didn't fall? Inconceivable!

— The Princess Bride • 1987

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Vizzini says inconceivable about everything that goes wrong for him, until Inigo, who has been quietly annoyed, points out that the word does not mean what he thinks it means. That reply is the part everyone quotes, and it is now the standard answer to anyone who uses a big word loosely.

Spoilers for The Princess BrideShow the scene

Vizzini and his gang have carried Princess Buttercup to the Cliffs of Insanity, and the man in black is climbing after them on a rope. Vizzini cuts it, expecting him to fall, but he is still clinging to a rock. Fezzik remarks that he has very good arms. Vizzini gasps that he didn't fall and calls it inconceivable; earlier he said the same of anyone following them. Inigo answers that he keeps using that word, and Vizzini orders them on.
