Batman

I'm the goddamn Batman.

— All-Star Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder • 2005

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Miller's hard-boiled Batman at his most self-parodic: a man bellowing his own brand name at a child. The line was meant as swagger and read as a joke, and that gap is why it lives. It is the best-known piece of All Star Batman & Robin, quoted ironically and turned into memes, mugs and a shorthand for over-the-top macho gruffness.

All Star Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder was a DC Comics series (2005 to 2008) written by Frank Miller and drawn by Jim Lee, set outside regular continuity. In issue #2, Batman introduces himself to the newly orphaned Dick Grayson as "the Goddamn Batman", in the middle of an abrasive crash course that includes verbal and physical abuse meant to stop Dick grieving. Miller then repeated the phrase at least once in almost every later issue of the run. The series sold over 300,000 copies of its first issue, but the line drew derision from fans and critics alike.
