A hunter must hunt...

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the game's whole creed said by its most seasoned hunter: no matter how frightening Yharnam gets, you keep going, because the hunt is what a hunter is. It is also a challenge to the player, who is shaken and under-equipped. Fans quote it for any grind, and the phrase became shorthand for Bloodborne's grim, forward-pushing spirit, printed on posters, mugs and fan art.

Central Yharnam, early in the game. Eileen the Crow, a veteran hunter who kills other hunters gone mad, waits in a hidden loft above the sewers, reached by smashing crates in a large warehouse. On the first visit she welcomes the newcomer with a warning that no humans are left. If you come back and talk to her again, she mocks a hunter unnerved by a few beasts, says that without fear in our hearts we are little different from the beasts, and sends you off with this line. She also gives you the Shake Off Cape gesture.
