Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Its mystery is the point: a stranger's handwriting, perhaps your own, hands you a quest word that nobody in Yharnam can define. It sets the tone of the whole game, which hands out riddles instead of instructions and lets fans spend years arguing what Paleblood is. 'Seek Paleblood' became the series' best-known bit of shorthand for the hunt itself.

Spoilers for BloodborneShow the scene

In Bloodborne (2015), after the character creator, a blood minister gives the hunter a transfusion in a Yharnam clinic, and the hunter wakes in a small sickroom in Iosefka's Clinic with a handwritten note waiting on a chair to the right. It tells them to seek Paleblood to transcend the hunt. Nobody explains it: the game never says what Paleblood is, and the note becomes the goal that drives the whole story, through the Healing Church and the nightmares beyond.
