Announcer

Terrorists win.

— Counter-Strike  ·  1999

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Three words that end a round and settle a lot of arguments: a calm, flat voice with none of the drama of the players it is judging. Fans quote it as the deadpan verdict on anything that goes wrong, and the voice belonging to one of the game's own creators gives it a kind of founder's authority. It has outlived every version of the game, since the recording never changed.

Spoilers for Counter-StrikeShow the scene

In Counter-Strike, an unseen announcer on a mild radio crackle marks the end of every round by naming the winner and "Terrorists win" plays when the terrorist side takes the round. The Announcer is also the voice that reports the bomb being planted or defused and the state of the hostages, and he speaks to both teams at once. According to the series wiki his voice is Jess Cliffe, one of the two creators of the original Half-Life mod, and his recordings have not changed since they were added. The matching line for the other side is the counter-terrorists' win call.
