Night City slang, Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)

Choom

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

One short word that tells you where you are: Night City, where nobody says 'friend' when they can say something rougher and warmer. It carries the game's whole attitude, loyalty in a city that eats people, and fans adopted it as the standard greeting for each other. Jackie and V made it the word the story keeps coming back to.

Choom is Night City slang for a close friend, one of the words the Cyberpunk tabletop games built into their street dialect long before the 2020 video game; the fan wiki lists it as a short form of 'choomba' and cites the older R. Talsorian books for it. In Cyberpunk 2077 (2020) it turns up all over the game's dialogue, journal entries and readable shards. In the side job "Heroes", the journal calls Jackie Welles V's best choom, and one Phantom Liberty shard opens by addressing a friend with the word.
