The greeting of Caesar's Legion, Fallout: New Vegas (2010)

Ave, true to Caesar.

— Fallout: New Vegas · 2010

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a salute that tells you who you are speaking to before they say anything else. The Legion greets the Mojave like a Roman parade ground, which is the writers' way of showing a regime built on borrowed glory. Fans use the greeting as a joke between friends and as a way of declaring allegiance in a game that lets you pick a side.

Spoilers for Fallout: New VegasShow the scene

Fallout: New Vegas (2010). Out in the Mojave, the recruit legionaries of Caesar's Legion hail anyone they pass with this greeting. 'Ave' is Latin for 'hail' and 'true to Caesar' means to live by Caesar's law, so the phrase works as both hello and goodbye. The Legion is the game's slaver army from beyond the Colorado River, which has invented its own language from English and Latin.
