An NCR trooper, Fallout: New Vegas (2010)

Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.

— Fallout: New Vegas ‧ 2010

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a throwaway line that says the whole of the NCR in a sentence: a soldier so bored with a war that he would take a nuclear winter as a change. Its success is the success of the game's background voices, where a line to nobody is funnier than a quest. Fans use it for any grim assignment and as an in-joke for the game.

Spoilers for Fallout: New VegasShow the scene

Fallout: New Vegas (2010). It is one of the stock lines that ordinary NCR troopers say as you pass them on patrol in the Mojave. According to the Fallout Wiki it was written by designer Akil Hooper and has since become a meme in the Fallout community. Joshua Sawyer was asked about it by a fan in a January 2011 Q&A and answered with a joke. A brainwashed NCR caravaner later repeated it in the Fallout TV series, season 2, episode 2, 'The Golden Rule'.
