What it means

Our interpretation.

A tiny emergency in a deadpan fantasy-announcer voice: your hero is starving and about to die. It is the sound of Gauntlet's central tension, that health is a clock and food is the only way to stop it, and fans still bark it at anyone hogging the snacks.

Gauntlet (Atari Games, arcade 1985) is a four-player dungeon crawl where each player's health drains steadily and food on the floor refills it. The game is noted for its narrator, produced by a TMS5220C speech chip, with the speech encoded by Earl Vickers and the voice by Ernie Fosselius, the filmmaker behind the Star Wars parody Hardware Wars. He repeats rule reminders and, when a player's life force runs low, says that their class needs food. The four classes are warrior, wizard, valkyrie and elf.
