Kratos

Boy.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The word carries Kratos's whole problem as a father: love he cannot say aloud, a past he does not want his son to inherit, and a habit of command left over from the old war god. Fans learned to read its tone, from stern to proud, and by the end of the game it can hit harder than any speech. It became the game's biggest running joke.

Spoilers for God of WarShow the scene

In God of War (2018) Kratos lives in the Norse wilds with his young son Atreus, and he rarely uses the boy's name. "Boy" is how he calls him, barked to correct him, steady him or call him to heel, from the first scene in the Midgard forest through the journey to scatter his late wife Faye's ashes from the highest peak. It is a recurring form of address, not one scene. Kratos is voiced by Christopher Judge and Atreus by Sunny Suljic.
