Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
CJ has just come home to bury his mother, been robbed by cops and dumped in the worst neighbourhood in the city, and he sighs. That weary reaction is what fans reached for: it is short, rude, and perfect for any moment when things get worse. The line also sets the tone of the game, an ordinary man pulled back into a life he left, and it has become a meme for hopeless situations.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004) begins in 1992 with Carl "CJ" Johnson, voiced by Young Maylay, returning to Los Santos after five years in Liberty City because his mother has been killed. Corrupt CRASH officers led by Frank Tenpenny pull his taxi over near Grove Street, take his money, threaten to frame him for a murder, and throw him out of their car in Ballas gang territory. CJ's reaction on finding himself there is this line; the game then points him to a nearby BMX bike and tells him to ride home to Grove Street.
