All we had to do was follow the damn train, CJ!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the series' great fail-state line: a mission so punishing that most players heard it again and again, delivered by a friend who sounds personally betrayed. Because the player is the one who failed, the blame lands on you. The meme took on a life of its own, far beyond the game.

Spoilers for Grand Theft Auto: San AndreasShow the scene

In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the mission "Wrong Side of the Tracks" sends Carl "CJ" Johnson to Unity Station in Los Santos with Big Smoke, who says the Vagos are cutting a deal and he wants to crash it. It is an ambush, and the Vagos flee by train. Smoke climbs on the back of a yellow Sanchez dirt bike and CJ must keep pace with the front carriage so Smoke can shoot the gang members. If the player lets the train get away, Smoke shouts this line and the mission fails.
