Pentakill!

— League of Legends ‧ 2009

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The best five seconds in the game: five dead enemies and an announcer who sounds almost surprised. A pentakill is the clip players save and friends bring up for years, which is why the word moved from game mechanic to everyday gaming slang, and why Riot named a whole undead metal band after it.

Spoilers for League of LegendsShow the scene

A pentakill is the announcer's callout in League of Legends for a champion killing five enemy champions in quick succession. The kill window is 10 seconds, refreshed by each kill, and after a quadra kill it stretches to 30 seconds. The announcer calls double, triple and quadra kills on the way, then "Pentakill!" for five; in the Hexakill mode there is a sixth step. The word also gave its name to a Riot Games universe: a metal band of undead champions, with its own albums and skin line.
