Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

One small word that makes Chloe sound like herself: loud, restless, a teenager who turns every feeling up to maximum. It is not a punchline so much as a signature, and fans use it as shorthand for the whole game. Players still tease the writers about it, and Max's awkward attempt to say it in Episode 3 and Chloe's later "I hate that word" gave it jokes of its own.

Spoilers for Life Is StrangeShow the scene

"Hella" is Chloe Price's all-purpose intensifier, sprinkled through all five episodes of Life Is Strange: she says it to Nathan Prescott in the school bathroom in Episode 1, and shouts "Hella yes!" in Episode 2, when a ricochet shot in the junkyard takes out a bottle while Max rewinds time to guide her aim. Writer Christian Divine, a Northern California native, put the word into Chloe's dialogue because he thought it suited a teenager from Oregon, and he showed it in the writing test he sent the developers, Dontnod. Players soon turned it into an in-joke.
